Before the completion of the International specialized exhibition “Astana EXPO-2017”, SEC “Shymkent” and the regional center “Rosatom Central Asia” signed an Agreement for mutual understanding and cooperation aimed at the development of small hydropower and other renewable energy sources in South Kazakhstan region, as well as resource conservation and effective nature management. Vitaliy Dragunov, Director General of Rosatom Central Asia and Aitmukhammed Aldazharov, Chairman of the Board of “SEC “Shymkent” signed the document.
The parties intend to establish jointly an innovative pilot mini-HPP of a container type on the South Kazakhstan mountain site with a capacity of up to 2 MW. Due to the agreed "roadmap" of cooperation, in September 2017 the first technical visit of specialists to survey the potential site and defining the location of the container and water intake will be held.
Establishment of mini-HPP in containers is handled by the Hungarian company Ganz Engineering and Energetics Machinery llc. (Ganz EEM), a member of “Atomenergomash” of “Rosatom” State Corporation. Mini-HPP can be used in those regions where settlements are not connected to the power grid. After delivery of containers with a turbine and control, already in a month the mini-HPP will be able to produce up to 1 MW of electricity. Mini-HPP is remote, through satellite communication. Negotiations on the possibilities of exporting mini-HPP to other countries are under way.
Considering the huge energy potential of the mountain rivers in the southern region of Kazakhstan, after completing the first joint projectwith the support of the Akimat of the South Kazakhstan region, , the parties intend to continue the further cooperation and implement other projects in the field of small hydropower.
